The region
Located at the top of the South Island, the Nelson region is blessed with the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand. With 3 National Parks, an abundance of safe sandy beaches and a multitude of award winning wineries and artists, it makes the perfect destination for holiday makers of all ages and interests.
ABEL TASMAN is probably the most propular of the 3 National Parks with visitors to the Nelson region. Located a 30min drive along the coast from Kisamar, Abel Tasman is the smallest of the National Parks and offers a vast number of walking tracks both through the forest and along the coast. There are almost 100 beaches at low tide, lush forest with interesting flora and fauna. The walking tracks are of a high standard and clearly marked making it a popular place to walk for people of all ages and abilities. There are are large number of companies offering a range of activities including:- kayaking, sailing, water taxis, guided-walking, swimming with seals, cruises and scenic flights.
KAHURANGI is a Mountain Park and offers some wonderful walking. The tracks vary in difficulty and length which means there is something suitable for most people. Many offer wonderful views of tasman bay.
NELSON LAKES National Park is located Near St Arnaud (about 1hrs drive.) There are a number of walks that can be done from the lakes ranging from 15min to 5 days.
WINERIES
The Nelson Region has around 30 wineries. Unlike the mass produced wine of the Marlborough region, Nelson vineyards are classed as boutique wineries meaning the emphasis is on quality and not quantity. For this reason Nelson produces some of the best wine in NZ.
Due to the varied terrain and climate across the region we are able to grow a large number of Grape varieties, including Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gerwurtztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Montepulciano and Malbec as well as New Zealand's signature variety Sauvignon Blanc.
As the volumes of wine produced by each vineyard are relatively small it is unlikely to find them Overseas, but to those with a knowledge of NZ wine, Nelson wine is regarded as one of New Zealand's best kept secrets.
GALLERIES
Since the turn of the last century, the natural beauty and idyllic climate of the Nelson region has attracted artists from all over NZ and the wider world. Added to that the majority of Nelson region is on Moutere Clay which is used by potters all over NZ. As a result of these factors, there are a vast number of local artists locally, covering all spectrums of the art world from glass-blowers to potters, wood-carvers to painters and sculptors to artisan furniture makers.
FISHING
There are some of the best trout streans in the world nearby which offer fabulous fly-fishing opportunities. There are a number of local guides available by prior arrangement to take you to the best spots.
Sea fishing is also popular and there are a local companies who specialise in fishing trips by boat. We also have surf casters if anyone want to go to one of the local beaches.
