Beautifully restored 18th century cottage
The door from the square leads into a contemporary kitchen / diner into the ground floor double bedroom with WC and secret courtyard garden with an olive and fig tree – just big enough for a table for two. The first floor lounge leads to the sunny terrace with dining for six and views across the churchyard to the fields and hills. The main bathroom with lovely roll top bath and shower over is on this floor and a further 2 bedrooms on the top floor. Two couples sharing the house will enjoy a large degree of privacy.

Cyclist friendly
Varied terrain and a great climate, the Languedoc offers much to the cyclist. We cycle all year round on roads that are quiet even in August, though spring and autumn will avoid the baking heat of the summer. This is Tour de France country, mountain cols provide adequately for those who prefer a challenge on holiday, stage 14 passes close to the house in July. We have maps and 2 mountain bikes to lend and will arrange bike hire for you locally.
The Languedoc and Midi Pyrenees offer superb motorbiking in the south of France. We are close to Mediterranean beaches, Andorra (110km) and the Spanish border, Barcelona 275km. Many routes featured by bikers on Best Biking Roads. We are biker friendly accommodation and have ample garaged parking, workshop and washing and drying facilities.

From the back door
Not many roam in the hills surrounding Sonnac Sur L’Hers. A network of tracks lead from the village through ancient towns and villages. A path from the back door leads to Spain though you may prefer to choose one of the many circular routes that offer a full day’s walking or that will bring you back in time for lunch, French style (i.e. long) on your sunny terrace.
A short drive brings you to the mighty Pyrenees for more challenging walking. We have maps and can advise on routes as long or as short as you wish.
Lac de Montbel (5km) is a site exceptionnel of 570 hectares, a lovely spot for walking, picnicking, swimming, water sports, fishing, bird watching, or simply soaking up the sun. We can advise and arrange activities for you. Slow right down and spend the day by the river Hers that flows through the village. A few hundred yards downstream, at the foot of wooded slopes is a natural basin, lovely for swimming.
The Aude is a fabulous region for birdwatchers with a wide range of habitats home to around 200 nesting species. From our terrace buzzards are a common sight, soaring high on the warm thermals. Watch the delightful “bobbing” habit of the black red starts and as dusk falls, see the barn owl heading off on its nightly patrol. In summer watch the amazing spectacle of swifts racing round the square hurling themselves into the eaves, often colliding with the zinc guttering with a resounding clunk whilst the house martins look on bemused. Swallow nests may be spotted all round the village and the local bat population sometimes gets to thinking the back of our house is still old barn.
Country roads and tracks across hills, woods and streams make ideal riding terrain. Our neighbour works at nearby stables and we will be happy to assist in arranging treks for individuals and groups.

Land of the Cathars
Medieval towns and villages, ruined chateaux on rocky outcrops...
Our holiday cottage and B&B nestle deep in the land of the Cathars – ruined chateaux stand on rocky outcrops, testament to its troubled past. Montsegur, one of the most famous symbols of the Cathar resistance is about 20mins from the house. Many other Cathar towns are nearby including Puivert, an easy cycle ride, Mirepoix for its fabulous weekly market and medieval centre, Fanjeaux, Bram and of course, Carcassonne.
The cobbled streets of the fairytale medieval city of Carcassonne offer a poignant insight into what life must have been like, lived among the ramparts and besieged by the Crusaders. The stained glass in the Basilique Saint-Nazaire alone is worth the visit. Try Kate Mosse, The Labyrinthe, or for something a bit more studious, A Perfect Heresy, Stephen O’Shea.
