Cultural heritage and architecture
Guided tours in the following towns:
La Bourboule
La Bourboule is a health resort, which still has many buildings, dating from the beginning of the last century. These testify to the penchant for luxury of the nouveaux riches, the industrialists from that era.
The aim of the guided tour is to draw the attention of the visitors to features that may otherwise be missed, such as interesting building façades, or the sumptuous interiors of the old hotels, with their grand reception rooms and staircases. Interesting anecdotes relating to the town are also related during the tour.
The church was built between 1885 and 1888 in a style similar to the Roman churches in the Auvergne. It is made from white lava rock, brick and volcanic material, and has twenty magnificent cornices that were sculpted by Burgundy artist Henry Charlier in 1941.
La Bourboule also boasts splendid architecture from the Belle Epoque:
The façade of the Rozier bakery, which is decorated with mosaics in blue, ochre and white and has a splendid veranda.
The caryatides (pillars in the form of female figures) of the town hall.
The large thermal baths in Neo-Byzantine style.
Besse / Super Besse:
Discover the history and architecture of this medieval town, dating from Queen Margot to the French Revolution.
Objects of interest include the medieval town centre, the Church of St. André, the Bailli castle, the Storm Towers, the Renaissance fountains, the Sainte Marie des Remparts manor house, and the paved alleys that meander between shops and workshops. The rich architectural heritage is reflected in the crosses sculpted from lava rock, the magnificent Roman chapels and the characteristic buildings.
Le Mont-Dore:
According to legend, Saint Pardoux miraculously cured the lame on many occasions thanks to the spa waters. This explains the adoration he has received in Le Mont-Dore since the eighth century. The original character of this church comes from the modern and high-quality decoration based on water themes. The chancel has been decorated by Jean Olin, and the walls are painted blue and adorned with ceramics in contemporary patterns reminiscent of the biblical theme of flowing water.
Discover the history of the Baths of Le Mont-Dore, from the ruins of the Roman thermae to the architectural heritage of the Belle Epoque (villas and de-luxe hotels). The Gothic Revival church should not be forgotten either.
