Q: How long does it take to get to Tapunui from the airport?
A: Tapunui is located on the South-West side of the island. It is a short 15 minute drive from the airport, travelling anti clockwise direction.
|
Q: Is the beach safe for swimming?
A: Tapunui is located across the road from some of the best swimming and snorkelling spots in Rarotonga. The beach directly across the road is perfect for swimming depending on the tides. To the left of the property 600m down the road near The Rarotongan Resort & Spa is one of the better spots with deep water and great snorkelling. Kayak and Snorkelling hire gear is also available at the nearby Kavera beach shops.
|
Q: Does the property have a dishwasher?
A: No. The fully equipped kitchen facilities include a large electric oven, Gas and electric cooking hobs, two sink areas for washing up, and plenty of bench space for creating those delicious meals with all the local produce available at the markets.
|
Q: What are the sleeping configurations for Tapunui?
A: The two downstairs bedrooms, each with ensuites can sleep two people comfortably in King size beds. The upstairs Master bedroom has a King bed which can be split into two singles on request, along with 3 additional futon beds that can accommodate extra persons in the open mezzanine living area (located across the walk over bridge from the Master bedroom). The upstairs area also has one bathroom/ensuite with shower.
|
Q: What should we bring with us to Rarotonga?
A: Although the weather is reasonably warm all year round (but very hot in the summer months Nov-Mar), it is best to pack for the elements with a light layer in the evenings and wet weather jacket if you are going to be out and about. Being a tropical environment, it can rain heavily from time to time. Mosquito repellent and sun screen are also suitcase essentials! Tapunui is close to the seabreeze where mosquitos are not as common, however after heavy rain there can be the odd mozzie here and there.
|
Q: Do you provide linen?
A: All linen for bedding is provided for guests for the duration of your stay. Additional bedding can be provided on request for guests staying for longer periods. Bath towels are provided also, it is the guests responsiblity to ensure all towels are left at the end of your stay. Please bring your own beach towels as we do not encourage our towels to be taken to the beach. There are also washing machine facilities also your use.
|
Q: Are there any poisonous animals/insects in Rarotonga?
A: Although most animals and insects in Rarotonga are harmless, there are a couple that you should be aware of, most commonly but seasonal found in shallow rocky areas around Rarotonga beaches are the "Stone-Fish". It is recommended you wear reef shoes or sandles if swimming around reefs or rocky areas as you do not want to step on these fish. Centipedes, Red ants and mosquitos are also common, but remember your repellent and they do not cause much harm. Friendly "Moko"- Geckos are long term residents of homes in Rarotonga. They are very harmless, although make a clicking noise which may alarm those who have never heard them before.
|
Q: What are some things to do in Rarotonga you would recommend?
A: For those travelling with children and young teenagers there are some fantastic tours on offer provided by several tourist operators. Glass bottom boat tours with a BBQ lunch are popular, the Safari tour is also a great way to discover Rarotonga taking you off road and up private roads for great look outs or the cross island walk with a guided tour for the more adventurous. Getting around is easy with the local buses going both clockwise and anticlockwise past the main road near Tapunui. Although scooters and motorbikes are a popular tourist transport option, it is recommended you take great caution of these underestimated motor vehicles. There has been many unfortunate accidents for tourists who can obtain serious injuries which can ruin a holiday, with helmets not compulsory guests are encouraged to be cautious if wanting to hire these. The speed limit around the island is 40kms in town and villages, and 50km on the open roads and in between villages.
Island nights and traditional Umukai (earth oven cooked food) are a popular evening entertainment option, plus many local restaurants with great seafood and live entertainment every night of the week- depending on your budget there is plenty to do and see. Or you can simply hide on the beach and do nothing at all!
|
Q: Is the property serviced during our stay?
A: The home is provided as a self contained option. Enough linen is provided for guests during their stay, however no clean linen will be replaced unless you are staying longer than 7 days. There are washing machine facilities available if you wish to wash linen during your stay. Tapunui also provides some general items such as toilet paper and dish washing liquid on arrival, however as this is a budget accommodation, it is the guests responsibilty to replenish as required for the duration of their stay.
General cleanliness and tidyness of the property is expected at all times. General cleaning equipment is provided for your use.
|
Q: If there are any problems during our stay who can we contact?
A: Tapunui is managed by a local property manager resident who stays in the village. They are available for any emergencies or urgent concerns, however are generally responsible for over seeing the check in and departure of guests plus housekeeping. Tapunui is a large but affordable accommodation option unique to Rarotonga that we hope guests will utilise to it's full potential with the added assurance of a local contact for assistance if required.
|
Q: Why do you not allow babies or toddlers to stay?
A: As a safety precaution, with large stairs, concrete flooring and concrete tables, Tapunui may not be appropriate for adverturous toddlers and babies. Young babies ie (3-6months, non walking/crawling) are permitted on request, however bedding facilities ie. cot/portacots are not provided. Children are welcome, however we advise parent supervision at all times around the stairs and upstairs areas.
|
Q: Additional Information for Guests
A: Personal Items:
Although the general daily life in Rarotonga is laid back and fairly safe, as with any country in the world, guests are encouraged to be smart with their personal belongings such as Passports, Mobile Phones, Laptops, Cameras and Cash. We provide a safe onsite for these items, however the property and owners are not liable for any items that are damaged or stolen during your stay in Rarotonga.
If you have any issues or concerns during your stay with us, please make these known to the property manager as we would like to ensure a pleasant and relaxed stay for all our guests who stay at our home.
For additional security there is a friendly resident dog "Tyson" who you will find roaming around the property. He used to belong to the owners of Tapunui but is now being looked after by the nearby neighbour. He makes a very good watchdog, and might also follow our guests to the beach for a swim from time to time.
|
Q: Do you allow parties in your home
A: Tapunui is our family home and we expect guests to respect that. With that in mind we do not encourage large group gatherings or parties, however should you wish to use the property for larger group gatherings please contact the owners to discuss this at your own discretion. Arrangements can be made with the property manager on request.
|
Q: Is there any issues with animals that we should be aware of?
A: Rarotonga is a friendly island with plenty of wildlife and animals around the island. Often dogs roam the roads and villages, and can be hazardous when driving along the main roads. They can also be a noise hazard and sometimes bark around the property. As much as we would like to control dogs on the island, this is something that is beyond our control. Minor birds, and the odd chicken stray around the property. We have a semi-open home which was purposely designed to encourage airflow and keep the property cool in the hotter months. Birds can be encouraged to come indoors if you choose to leave your food items around the kitchen for them to scope out, so this is not encouraged. If you have an issue with animals during your stay please bring this to the attention of our property manager.
|
Q: Do you provide mosquito nets?
A: Being a tropical island, mosquitoes come with the territory. We provide mosquito nets for your stay should you wish to use them. The property does not have mosquito screens to encourage airflow. We DO NOT ALLOW MOSQUITO COILS TO BE BURNED IN THE UPSTAIRS AREA OF THE PROPERTY. All coils must be used downstairs and with a save flame prove dish. If unsure please check with the property manager.

Tapunui Huge Home Great Price - Reviewed by Louise from New Zealand in July 2017. This is a great house for big family gatherings. The outdoor BBQ area was awesome, as is the kitchen. A HUGE house. Very alternative and was built as a labour of love. It can be noisy at times with locals coming and going up and down the shared driveway all hours off the day and night as well as roosters crowing (they're everywhere on the island) and dogs barking. The house is a very open planned design.
A misunderstanding by the property manager of our arrival date meant the house had not been cleaned fully before our arrival. There was also no drinking water for us on our arrival so had to go thirsty till the next day when we could fill the water dispenser. I think if there was no misunderstanding about our arrival date and time this wouldn't have happened.
The upstairs bathroom wasn't able to be used as the plumbing was blocked the entire 9 day stay. At least there were two others downstairs to use.
Close to the Rarotongan resort, CoCo Putt and beautiful clean beaches. There is a marine reserve nearby with stunning marine life, a must do! Scooter, kayak and push bike hire just up the road.

Tapunui Huge Home Great Price - Reviewed by Mellisa in July 2016. Tapunui is excellent value for what we paid. We had 6 children from 6yrs to 20 and the location was perfect for all of us especially with the best snorkelling on the island directly opposite from us.
If like your like us and you can adjust to the noise from a few of the many dogs and roosters on the island then Tapunui is perfect. Its only down fall is open plan down stairs which we were well aware of through photos. However this could be easily changed by adding in a wall creating a private courtyard off the main bedroom.
As a family of 8 we thoroughly enjoyed 20 days at Tapunui and our first visit to Rarotonga. Rating: 4.9

Tapunui Huge Home Great Price - Reviewed by Brenda from New Zealand in January 2014. We were very happy with the home, it accommodated us comfortably big & spacious. The beds were so comfortable the kitchen was fantastic we had one night where my family came over for a Bar B Que the out door living area was great. We were a bit disappointed that the bar b Que which turned out to be a hot plate on a gas burner with only had 3 legs as we had planned to do most of our meals on the barby I would also recommend you put up an outside clothes line up because it was difficult to get our clothes completely dried. Overall the house was a perfect choice for us...

Thanks for the great feedback we are so pleased you enjoyed your time at our family home.
We have since replaced the damaged BBQ, to ensure guests can get full use of both the gas hob facilities in both the kitchen and BBQ area.
The clothes line was previously located at the back of the property but relocated to the covered laundry area as a suitable area for all weather.
Thanks again for the comments we are glad you had a great holiday at our island home.

Tapunui Huge Home Great Price - Reviewed by Michelle from New Zealand in June 2013. Was lovely and big, slight issue with the hot water, as their was none even when property manager got someone to get on the roof to get the plug to plug in the solar, Rating: 4.3
Owners response to this comment: Kia orana
Thank you for the great feedback, we are glad you enjoyed the house and its affordable spacious offerings.
The solar booster is always available to be switched on and takes a while to heat up on so the property manager always ensures this is done on periods with no sun.
We never have issues with the hot water and this will be monitored more closely in future.

Tapunui Huge Home Great Price - Reviewed by Grace from New Zealand in June 2013. I think it should be reiterated that the top level (master bedroom included) is all open, and that downstairs bugs and other "guests" (i.e. birds etc) can get into the house, as it is generally open. But besides that, it is a fantastic property. I would recommend it for any large families that need an affordable place to stay. Rating: 4.7
Owners response to this comment: Thank you for your feedback. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. The upstairs area is a mezzanine style which means
Open plan as detailed in our property description. The idea allows for more breeze and airflow in the home :) a very unique feature. The property is regularly sprayed however it is the tropics and bugs and birds are regularly controlled simply by ensuring food items are stored away out of sight :)
Thanks again for the great feedback we are proud to be able to share our unique family home with visitors.

Tapunui Huge Home Great Price - Reviewed by Arwen from New Zealand in August 2012. Great property and experience. Amazing house, open, cool, huge, good feeling and relaxed vibe. Cleaner/property manager was there on arrival - lovely lady who gave us fruit and explained some local things for us. Great facilities, good showers. Hot water not going at first but luckily my partner sussed it - instructions for this in property book would have been good. Lots of towels plus good undercover clothes drying area. Food processor not working unfortunately for our fruit cocktails. Rubbish instructions would be helpful - which bin for what. Learnt to cover fruit or birds would help themselves. Also little dog forces his way through opening next to main door and sleeps on the couch! Nice dogs, good guards, just prefer them outside. Beach beautiful, some rocks but swimmable areas. Nice sandy area for sunbathing, feels private with not alot of foot traffic. House handy to Kavera central shops, Cocoputt mini golf and cafe and the Rarotongan Resort where we had family staying and went to eat/drink/swim as well. Nice neighbours - friendly but quiet. Will recommend and hope to visit again. Good for families or friends because of space and location. Excellent! Awesome memories thank you. Rating: 5.0
