Muna Moke in Queenstown - Reviewed by Alison from Australia in July 2013. We really enjoyed our stay at Muna Moke.Found the instructions for rubbish disposal hard to follow ie couldn't find the place to leave the rubbish and on what day.Fantastic location.Great house.
Rating: 4.7
Owners response to this comment: Great to hear you enjoyed Muna Moke and had a wonderful stay. Sorry we have never had confusion with the rubbish disposal system and will try to rewrite it. Currently the guest guide in the house state: Two council approved rubbish bags are supplied upon your arrival (these are blue in colour and are pre-paid for collection). If you require further bags during your stay you can purchase these at any local supermarket. Please ensure you tie the bags securely and place them on Glenorchy Road (opposite the Moke Lake Road by the sign) for collection. Recycling bins are also provided at the same location as the rubbish collection point.
The drop off point is a huge wire cage by the signpost showing Moke Lake road with recycling bins beside it and pretty much stands out. It is a different council system compared to Australian locations sorry. Thanks very much for your feedback.

Description
High up in the clouds, eye level with the majestic mountain ranges surrounding Queenstown's Lake Wanaka, you will find the "Hermit's Secret" - or as it is known in Maori - MunaMoke. This three bedroom house, perched among pine forest and native bush takes its name from being in one of Queenstown's premium locations - just off the scenic road from Queenstown to Glenorchy, and only ten minutes from the main town centre, MunaMoke is a secret that is worth keeping.
With stunning views over Lake Wanaka, all the way out to the famous "Remarkables" mountain ranges, the entire house is positioned to enjoy the ever changing vista from sunrise to sunset. MunaMoke's spacious deck at the back of the house is an ideal spot from which to watch the clouds go by, or spy on the many boats crossing along Lake Wakatipu. The deck is furnished with an eight-seater outdoor setting, the perfect place for outdoor dinners, or a glass of wine as the sun sets behind the mountains.
The expansive, open plan living and dining areas face towards the deck, and are surrounded by French doors and tall windows on every side of the house. The lounge centres around the stone fireplace, and together with the sunny reading nook by the north-facing windows makes a cozy place to retreat during a snowy Queenstown winter. The house has underfloor heating, meaning that if you want to venture away from your cosy nook in the lounge, you will still be warm and comfortable.
The kitchen adjoins the lounge, and comes fully equipped with everything you could wish for during your stay at MunaMoke. Whether you are cooking for friends or catering for your family, you will find everything you need to guarantee successful meal times. Framed by the incredible views, the dining room revolves around the ten-seater oak dining table, inviting the family to gather for dining, or playing one of the board games that are provided at the house.
If board games are not your thing, you can choose to relax by watching TV, either in the lounge, where you will find a large flat screen TV equipped with satellite TV and DVD player, or else the TV in the master bedroom. You will find the master bedroom a haven in itself - located as the only room on the top floor of the house, the bedroom has a stately four-post King-sized bed, ample storage, as well as a private balcony which captures the sweeping lake and mountain views.
Downstairs is another large bedroom with a Queen sized bed and large built-in wardrobe - this bedroom also faces out towards the lake and features the same changing landscape you can see from the dining room. The third bedroom is at the front of the house and has two-king sized single beds, and views out to the side of the house.
The downstairs bathroom features a luxurious, deep bath that is surrounded by windows showcasingyet more views, as well as a separate, spacious shower, and a modern bathroom sink. There is also a separate toilet, as well as another room for the laundry, complete with washing machine and dryer.
The house comes with complimentary WiFi, and you will also find a selection of children's toys for those little guests.
MunaMoke really is the perfect place for any kind of Queenstown holiday you may wish for: whether you are after action-packed adventure - bungee jumping, hitting the ski slopes, hiking or biking across the many different tracks that the area is renowned for - or enjoying the slower pace of Queenstown's many attractions.

Queenstown for everyone
There are few places in the world that can justify lofty ambitions of being “fit for a Queen”, and yet - the story goes - this is exactly what Queenstown was named for by early gold prospectors, who saw the beauty of the mountains, lakes and rivers, and declared the area “fit for a Queen.”
From this rather grand baptism, Queenstown has gone from strength to strength in becoming New Zealand’s most premier travel destination. Every year, travellers from all around the world come to Queenstown to experience a place like no other – part alpine resort, part lakeside-paradise, and part outdoor adventure capital of the world - Queenstown is a place that will put out the welcome-mat, no matter what your travel agenda may be.
With a population of about 28,000 permanent residents, Queenstown is one small town that swells to three times its size, as around 2 million visitors pass through the Queenstown area every year. Once an important area on the Pounamu (precious New Zealand green stone) trail for South Island Maori, Queenstown is an area that is steeped in legends and has a colourful history. One of those legends tells how Queenstown’s central lake - Lake Wakatipu - was created by an evil giant who had abducted a young Māori woman. During the girl’s rescue the giant was knocked over, and ever since then he lies sleeping in the depths of the lake while his beating heart makes the lake rise and fall. The discovery of gold in local rivers during the 1860s was the beginning of Europeans arriving to search for their fortunes in the Shotover and Arrow rivers – after the miners left for better prospects on the South Island’s West Coast, Queenstown began its long journey to becoming one of the world’s most attractive travel spots.
With its majestic mountain ranges, clear azure lake, numerous walking tracks, and fertile wine valleys, Queenstown is about as scenic as it gets. As there is something for everyone in Queenstown, taking advantage of everything that Queenstown has to offer could take a long time, so we have compiled some essential insider tips so that you can make the most of your holiday with us at MunaMoke.

If you are not into survival of the fittest, but are still wanting to make the most of Queenstown’s beautiful and unique natural environment, there are plenty of choices, from hiking to mountain biking - and of course, Queenstown’s winter draw card – the plentiful snowfields.
