Fishing
Kawhaka Lodge is the only fishing lodge on the West Coast. The area surrounding the lodge offers some of New Zealand’s finest fly-fishing with a large number of spectacular and remote rivers, bush clad lakes and mysterious spring creeks to choose from.
West Coast fishing offers predominantly a wild brown trout population with large sea run fish in the months of October November and December. The large sea run trout follow the whitebait up the river during these early months.
The resident Kawhaka Lodge guides utilise a variety of fishing access methods from 4WD vehicles, boats for lake fishing and helicopters which land right on the doorstep of the lodge. If you want to walk 5 minutes or 5 kilometres we can take you there.
Beautiful sea run Salmon can also be caught in local rivers in February and March with an average size of 8-15 pounds.

Fishing Style
The Fishing style: Virtually all your fish will be stalked and sighted before you begin to cast. Most fish will be quite visible and within a range of 30-40ft. You will fish with mostly barbless hooks and all fish will be returned to the river (after photo’s have been taken) as we have a 'catch & release' policy to ensure the future of these fisheries.
Heli-Fishing: The lodge has it’s own heli-pad and heli-fishing on the West Coast is one of the experiences of a lifetime. This is an incredible landscape of high mountains, dense forests and a wide variety of rivers and streams to choose from. Heli-fishing from Kawhaka Lodge gives you access to remote fishing locations where the scenery alone is world class. So give this some thought when organizing your itinerary. Prices vary so let us know what you would like to experience with our Heli-fishing options and we’ll send you a quote.
Rates:
Guided Fly Fishing: $650Nz per day

Other Activities
Any visitor to Kawhaka Lodge is encouraged to allow time in order to explore the region, there is much to offer the traveler here. The West Coast is New Zealand's cultural 'heartland', and like other such places around the world, it has generated its fair share of legends and stories.
The region is populated by only 31,000 people, known to New Zealanders as 'Coasters', a term synonymous with friendliness and hospitality. It is an adventure and outdoor paradise, with beach & forest walks to suit all ages and abilities, tourism experiences, caving, rafting, canoeing & kayaking, surfing, jet boating, jet skiing, glacier walks, scenic flights, mountain biking, horse treks, fishing and gold panning are just some of the activities available.

Cultural Activities
The West Coast is also becoming increasingly famous for its world-class artists & craftspeople. The dramatic landscapes attract a growing number of national & international artists, who value a lifestyle hard to find in more populated areas. We know many of these people and are happy to introduce you to both the artists and their work.
If you are interested in uncovering the history and culture of the areas you visit then you will embrace the special experiences of a Kawhaka Lodge cultural tour.

Heli Tours
If you are the kind of person who likes to make the absolute most of every opportunity, taking a Heli-Tour on the West Coast is definitely for you. Kawhaka Lodge has it’s own heli-pad and is located within 2 minutes flying time of the impressive Southern Alps.
Our preferred operator is 270West Helicopters who run a high tech fleet of machines defined by the needs of the geography they work in. The pilots can fly you into remote wilderness locations to fish, hunt, photograph, walk or dine.

Birdwatching
New Zealand is known as the seabird capital of the world and is also home to a number of forest birds that live nowhere else on Earth” Nz Department of Conservation (DOC)
Kawhaka Lodge has been built strategically within native rainforest surrounds. The birdlife is abundant throughout the year and birdsong is constant around the lodge. Mornings are a very special time, you can lie in bed at dawn listening to the wilderness waking up with song, or wander through the dawn chorus to see them in action.
Many of New Zealands prime species can be viewed on an almost daily basis. We are also fortunate to have quite a few very rare New Zealand native birds at certain times of the year.
You can regularly see and hear Tui’s, Bellbirds, Fantail, Weka, Pukeko, Kahu, Karearea, Torea (winter), herons, fernbirds, robins and tom tits around the property.
